I recently was in the market for a good gaming headset (especially wanted one for CoD games).
I determined that I wanted a surround sound headset. Since I never had one before, I came under the impression that a true 5.1 headset would be best (4 speakers per ear). As such I bought a Tritton AX Pro ($170).
My thoughts on AX Pro:
Pros:
[*]OK sound quality.
[*]I could tell the directions people were coming from.
Cons:
[*]The headset was a tad ugly, but its sound quality that I was interested in, so it wasnt too important to me.
[*]Heavy headset, and slightly uncomfortable (squeezed a tad tight against head).
[*]Lots of wires.
[*]No mic feedback.
[*]The mic did not swivel (I like to rotate it out of way at times).
A few weeks after buying the headset, I tried out my friends Ear Force X31 (stereo wireless headset). I liked wireless much better, and it felt more comfortable, so I returned my AX Pro and bought an Ear Force X41 (on sale for $170, normally $200). I was skeptical if this simulated 7.1 surround sound would be as good as AX Pro, but if I didnt like it, I would return it (only 1 speaker per ear).
My thoughts on Ear Force X41:
Pros:
[*]Awesome sound.
[*]I could clearly tell which direction people were coming from.
[*]Wireless (still need to connect mic into xbox controller, but no biggie).
[*]Nice microphone stand (rests on digital box when not in use).
[*]Lightweight and comfortable.
[*]Can hear voice in microphone (also has an auto boost to increase chat volume if game becomes loud).
[*]Microphone swivels out of way.
Cons:
[*]Headset will just stop working when batteries run out (have not experienced it yet, but they did this to maximize battery life). I understand the batteries can last up to 20 hours. I can easily live with this.
Final verdict:
The Turtlebeach Ear Force X41 is superior to Tritton AX Pro. The sound is much better, its more comfortable, and is wireless. I highly recommend this headset to anyone considering a good surround sound headset.
Anyone else have experience with surround sound headsets? Which ones you like?
