I know as well as anyone that Black Ops has latency and hit detection issues, but I noticed something recently that I thought was pretty interesting. In late November, I bought the new model of the XBOX 360 to replace my older 360 model that broke. One of the things that I thought was a cool bonus to getting the new model of the 360 was the built in wireless (I had been using a wired connection on my old model). I have a pretty decent router and high speed internet and I hadn't really experienced a lot of problems with connection strength or latency on Black Ops up to that point.
When I hooked up my new 360, I was pretty excited to use the wireless because my siblings used to trip over my ethernet cable and I would get disconnected and I was ready to be done with that. When I finished setting it all up, I put in COD and started playing online multiplayer. I'm a pretty decent player and have an excellent KDR so I'm used to doing well in online matches. In fact, I had played earlier that day and I was pretty much wrecking.
The first couple games that I played on the new 360 weren't very good, so I was like that's alright, we all have bad games. So I played a few more and continued to do badly. It wasn't just a slight KDR drop off or anything. I was getting severely owned by pretty much every player I encountered. After several hours of playing and getting really upset at my crappy performance, I had figured out that I seemed to be doing bad because every time I encountered someone, I was dead before I barely had time to glimpse the person. I even tried completely camping for a few games and even then, the other players always seemed to have the drop on me.
So I finally decided to put my wire back in and see what happened. My first three games I got over a 3.00 KDR and I felt way better about my performance over all. To test this observation, I kept switching off between wired and wireless connection for the next week. After that week, I could say without a doubt that I did a lot better when I used the ethernet cable. I've been using it ever since.
Obviously, it seems logical that a wire would have a quicker response time than wireless and I acknowledge that the results may have been skewed by psychological factors or other factors as well, but the whole thing got me wondering if there's anyone else that's had similar experiences. Has anybody else noticed a huge performance difference between wired and wireless connections. If so, maybe the fact that more people are using wireless than before could be a contributing factor to the latency issue. Maybe I'm just crazy. Thoughts?
EDIT: Alright, I see that most people consider the wireless versus wired difference to be pretty obvious and well known. I didn't know that for sure until I tried it, so I guess that makes me a dummy. Either way, if that is the case then how is Treyarch supposed to fully fix the latency issue if part of the problem is out of their hands?
