The Sound of Call of Duty

NOTE: This is a LONG read, so don't complain, because I WARNED YA!

ANOTHER NOTE: Don't just READ this thread WITHOUT talking about it! TELL US what you want the sounds to be for BLACK OPS! I'm interested to KNOW!

I finally have to bring up this topic, because NOBODY is talking about it!

Sound plays a major role in Call of Duty gameplay, and SHOULD BE DISCUSSED!

I have played World at War and Modern Warfare 2, sound plays an equally important role in both games, but the games have dramatically different sound effects, and I want to know everybody's opinion on the matter!

NOTE: I do have a Turtle Beach headset, so there might be noises I can hear that most other people can't.

World at War Sounds -

In World at War there are some important notes about the sound when you play the game. FIRST, sound greatly dissipates when it is coming from behind a wall. For example, I can hear footsteps on a wooden floor 50 feet + when there is nothing inbetween me and the enemy. However, if that enemy were behind a wall walking on the wooden floor, I could only hear him maybe 20 feet away. THE VERY SAME goes for gun sounds. If a guy is shooting behind a wall, he is very quiet, while if he was out in the open as was I, it was very noticeable. One thing interesting about World at War is, bolt action rifles lost sound when the scope was removed. That doesn't make too much sense to me, but it was that way.

When you are running around without dead silence in World at War, your footsteps were flat out LOUD! There is also an annoying chain sound that rattles when you run.

World at War also had a very unique tribute to sound, gun sounds would actually COMPLETELY be lost over distance. If I'm on Airfield by the airplane wing, and somebody is shooting an MP-40 in that two story building, I can't hear him, even if he doesn't have a suppressor. The ONLY guns that ACTUALLY carried sound across the entire map were bolt actions with sniper scopes attached, and the PTRS. Sometimes I would randomly die at distance in World at War, and I won't have any idea what the hell just killed me in one hit because I didn't hear it... EVERY TIME that happens, it's the M1 Garand with a sniper scope, which is still very quiet.

Snipers in World at War had a distinct echo that was kind of cool and I think a very nice addition to make the game sound more life like.

Second note, another interesting thing about World at War occured when people fired suppressed guns. If somebody is shooting a Type 100 at me with a suppressor, I can only hear one thing... the bullets hitting the wall behind me. This makes finding the guy who is shooting at me farily difficult.

On the topic of dead silence, the perk greatly reduced the noise of your footsteps, but with a headset like mine, I can STILL hear them running at a close distance from me. (within 15 feet maybe)

Final note, in World at War they had a great feature where you can turn off the music in game so there won't be any distractions. Game sound and voice sound could also be adjusted I do believe giving people a lot of customization on the sounds they hear in game which was very unique AND helpful!

NOW! Onto Modern Warfare 2!

I will follow the same general pattern as I did when discussing World at War. In MW2, sound BARELY dissipated if the guy was behind a wall. You could still hear them very clearly despite the fact that there is a concrete wall in between you and the enemy. This attribute went for BOTH footsteps and gun sounds. It didn't matter, I could hear footsteps if I was a in a building, and the enemy was in a COMPLETELY different building. I can also hear a UMP-45 firing in the next building with ease as well, just something to note and talk about. Which do you prefer, the World at War system, or the MW2 system?

Next up, gun sounds. Modern Warfare 2 is actually completely different than World at War. In Modern Warfare 2, I can hear a UMP-45 fire COMPLETELY across the map, sometimes somebody would randomly fire at the beginning of a game at their spawn on Quarry with their UMP-45, and I can hear it. This is a huge change from World at War, where at that distance, everything but a sniper would've lost their sound. It doesn't matter what the gun, I can hear it at a far distance. (unless it's supressed)

Snipers do NOT echo in Modern Warfare 2, which is a change from World at War, when you hear a .50 cal being fired, the sound vanishes after a split second. In World at War, the echo of a sniper carried for almost a second.

Suppressors in Modern Warfare 2 are LOUD! Instead of hearing the bullets hitting the wall behind me, the sound of the actual gun firing is MUCH LOUDER and I know EXACTLY where that guy firing the suppressed Mini Uzi is. While suppressors keep you off the radar, with a headset, you can easily tell where the guy is.

ONTO Dead silence, in Modern Warfare 2, Ninja Pro is DEAD SILENT! I have only EVER heard a Ninja Pro run when he was 5 feet away, in other words, too late to react and kill him. ALSO, Sitrep Pro does NOT amplify Ninja Pro. (which annoys the HELL out of me) However, MW2 had a cool feature where if you ran through tall grass, there was always a grassy sounding noise that lagged behind the person running, so in those rare cases, I FOUND THE NINJA!

I always joke around in MW2, and complain when I die to a Ninja Pro, because that perk LITERALLY kills me more than anything.

Modern Warfare 2 did add Sitrep Pro, which was new because there was no footstep amplification perk beforehand. One unique feature is that it ONLY amplified enemy footsteps. Your own footsteps also became a little softer, as well as your teammates, so Sitrep Pro is actually really useful in team based games. Also, enemy footsteps if they are right on top of you or something on a metallic floor are LOUD! It almost hurts my ears how loud some people get, and the distance you can hear people is incredible! Sitrep Pro in NO WAY cancelled out Ninja Pro though.

LASTLY, In MW2, there is no way to modify the sounds you hear in game, this is a MAJOR problem to some people, including me. I do not want to hear the music playing in the background as I'm playing! I'm sure you all know what happens when 1 minute is left in Search and Destroy. You can't hear a THING when that music is running!

Well, congratulations! You made it THIS far! NOW! What type of sounds would you like to hear in Black Ops??

I'm interested to know what the community thinks Black Ops should implement involving sound because it is a MAJOR part to many people's game!

I talked about WaW and MW2 in depth because those two games provided great examples of certain sound gameplay.

LEAVE your thoughts and let's have an INTELLIGENT discussion!
