How to play multiplayer splitscreen without connection?

at a friends house ive played black ops split screen vs him and ONLY HIM. meaning NO other player hence no internet connection/xbox gold.
How do i play a split screen game mode without having xbox gold? i know for sure its possible but i want to figure out how. every time i attempt this it asks for xbox gold.. Yet i dont wanna play with other people around the world and obviously i cant at the moment.

Short and simple:
I wanna play a multiplayer match vsing my friend in split screen mode. NOT Xbox live.
How can i achieve this with no xbox gold?
