Split Screen Side-by-side?

Just registered for the site but didn't see anything on this topic specifically.

Is it possible to change the multiplayer on XBOX Live to a side-by-side rather than the top and bottom orientation?  I can't figure out how to do it and I have my nephew in town so we wanted to play split screen but the top/bottom view sucks.

Any help is appreciated.
