I recently purchased a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem because I thought it would be an upgrade from the modem the cable company supplies. As far as set up goes.... very easy to get up and running. The problem was that I noticed my online game play went way down and that I was skipping, dropping ect. After some research I found that this brand of Motoral modem as well as many other Motorola's are notorious for having a horrible ping connection. (can test your ping at www.pingtest.net) I was getting a packet loss consistently w/ hard wired and wireless computers at a loss rate of 58%. Which is not good at all for online gaming. THE FIX. Go in to your modem VIA the web address provided so you can change modem settings. Click on the FireWall tab at the top of the screen make sure that none of the boxes have checks in them Hit apply Problem solved. I am now at a 0% packet loss. Hope this helps someone out.
