Changing Gamertag/Name During Game

How are Black Ops players able to change their Gamertags/names during a Black Ops match?

I will often see "so and so renamed so and so" during a game

I thought to change one's gamertag one must go to the dashboard, which exits Black Ops

I have screenshots and replays to prove this occurrence. Can anyone fill me in?
